Red Rock Canyon Visitor App

The Red Rock Canyon NCA cell phone app was a year-long project that started from a wishlist provided by the BLM. After determining our (SNC) budget for the project, we decided we would need to work with an existing platform rather than develop an entirely custom application. We chose STQRY because it was commonly used for parks and had previous partnerships with federal land management agencies.

The biggest challenge with this project was learning not all of our desires were possible with the platform. More specifically, there were limitations with custom mapping, and this was one of our biggest needs for visitors. I was able to conceive workarounds for an overview map and for putting our trail shapefiles into the app in a way that visitors could utilize the GPS functionality and track their progress along a particular trail.

Something positive to come out of this experience is that I found a lot of bugs within the platform and was able to report them to our representative who then told the software developers. We contributed a great deal of user experience (UX) feedback for STQRY.
